Financing media products

Films are funded by the production company, such as Universal or Warner Bros, these companies will give a director money in order to make their film. The production company will want to make this money back when the movie is released or they will have lost a huge amount of money. Other ways films make money are through cinema ticket sales, merchandise, toys, games, dvd sales, sponsorship deals, and foreign releases.

Independent films can get funding away from production companies. Some businesses will give money to film makers because they like what they're doing. The BFI can give people funding, you can get a National Lottery grant, or they can get a loan from a bank. People may also use crowdfunding to make money. Websites like GoFundMe allow people to donate to other people for various causes.

Tv programmes on commercial channels such as ITV and Channel 4 get their funding from adverts and sponsorship deals. Before the show starts it will show who they are partnered with E.g Coronation street is sponsored by compare the market and Hollyoaks is sponsored by Domino's Pizza. Companies will pay the TV company to show their adverts during the commercial breaks. Cable and PPV get their funding from the subscriptions that must be paid to watch them. Some of them also run adverts as well. Examples of this are SKY, Netflix and Amazon Prime.

The BBC gets its money through the TV License. The TV License allows people to watch TV legally. This includes all TV channels other than cable and PPV subscriptions. As a part of this the BBC doesn't show adverts because it gets its money from the license.

Newspapers get their funding from the purchase of the newspaper. They also have adverts in them so they get extra funding an example of this is The Sun. Free newspapers such as The metro only get their funding through adverts ran through the paper.

Websites get their money from adverts. They sell ad space on their website for people to place their ads. Some websites have a subscription fee to be able to use the website, or to access more parts of a website. E.g being able to see newspapers from a few weeks ago but you have to pay to see the recent ones.

Crowdfunding is another source of money people can use. People will create a page on a website and give people a brief explanation on why they are doing it. GoFundMe is a crowdfunding website and is used by many people for many reasons such as hospital bills, medical treatment or funding movies.

A National Lottery grant a sum of money that is donated to "good causes". The money given has been raised by the National Lottery. It has awarded more than £9 billion since 2004.

Giving newspapers and magazines away for free makes commercial sense because they can charge more for advertising. This is because if the magazine is free then more people will see it meaning that they can charge more for advertisers because they know people will see it.

To get the money from the license free the BBC has to provide good value for money shows and shows that appeal to everyone. Because it is being paid with tax it has to make sure people like what they're watching or people will argue they're paying for nothing. They have songs of praise on air on sunday to appeal to religious people and they have countryfile on to appeal to people who live in the country.
